A new genomic study led by Gianni Barcaccia from the University of Padova, Italy, suggests that the Shroud of Turin, regarded as one of Christianity's most significant relics, may have Indian origins. The research indicates that 38.7% of the DNA contamination reflects lineages associated with the Indian subcontinent, likely due to historical fabric trade networks. The term ‘Hindoyin' found in rabbinic texts and the Greek word ‘Sindôn' for fine linen may connect the Shroud to the Sindh region in present-day Pakistan, known for its high-quality textiles. The Shroud, measuring 4.4 meters long and 1.1 meters wide, has been in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin for almost 500 years. It has retained diverse DNA from various eras, including traces from domestic animals like cats and dogs, as well as wild species such as deer and rabbits. Additionally, the study identified DNA from fish and crustaceans. However, the timeline for when these contaminants were introduced remains uncertain, complicating efforts to identify the Shroud's original DNA.
