The Central Railway has introduced India's first non-air-conditioned suburban train equipped with automatic doors at the Kurla Carshed in Mumbai, marking a significant safety advancement for the city's suburban network. This development comes in response to a tragic incident in June 2025 near Mumbra, where five commuters lost their lives due to overcrowding and unsafe practices. Following this, the Railway Board mandated that all new non-AC suburban rakes must include automatic door-closing systems, with an initial target to roll out prototypes by November 2025. The newly unveiled 12-car rake, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, has yet to enter passenger service and will undergo rigorous certification trials by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). These trials will evaluate door operations, obstruction detection, ride stability, and performance under simulated load conditions. The automatic doors are designed to open in about three seconds and close in four seconds, with a dwell time of 30 seconds at stops. This system aims to reduce footboard travel, a major cause of fatalities in Mumbai's suburban trains. The rake features 19 compartments, including various classes and luggage compartments, and incorporates several safety upgrades, such as fire detection systems and modified alarm mechanisms. Additionally, design changes have been made to enhance passenger comfort and ventilation, including wider windows and improved airflow systems. The train's entry into regular service will depend on the successful completion of the RDSO trials and subsequent approvals.
