In Aleppo, Syria, the current rainfall season has turned perilous as floodwaters threaten vast agricultural lands and the livelihoods of rural communities. By March 19, 2026, water levels in the Siha plains reached critical levels, with nearly 7 million cubic meters of water pressing against a 12-kilometer embankment in Western Siha. A partial breach has already flooded approximately 600 hectares of farmland, with a full collapse risking an additional 2,000 hectares and displacing residents from three villages. In Eastern Siha, 40 million cubic meters of water are contained by a 20-kilometer embankment, endangering 30,000 hectares of agricultural land and 11 villages. Overall, over 65,000 people are at risk of displacement. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) mobilized resources on March 31, 2026, to reinforce embankments and prevent further flooding. This emergency response aims to protect the livelihoods of thousands of smallholder farmers, ensuring they can continue their agricultural activities during the season.
