Mofakkarul Islam, the alleged mastermind behind the hostage crisis involving seven judicial officers in Malda district, West Bengal, was arrested at Bagdogra airport while attempting to escape. The officers were held for eight hours at the Kaliachak 2 Block Development Office amid protests alleging that voters' names were improperly removed from electoral rolls ahead of the state Assembly elections scheduled for April 23. The Supreme Court of India described the hostage-taking as a 'deplorable' and 'well-planned' act aimed at undermining the judiciary, emphasizing that it obstructed judicial officers from performing their duties. In response, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of India to ensure the presence of central forces where judicial officers are handling voter objections. So far, 33 individuals, including an Indian Secular Front (ISF) candidate, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
