In Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, four men were arrested by the Cybercrime Branch police for allegedly running a tech support scam targeting foreign nationals. The suspects, aged between 24 to 27, were found to have advertised a toll-free tech support number online, attracting victims primarily from the United States and Europe. According to Shavya Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Cybercrime Branch, the suspects would gain access to victims' laptops via screen-sharing apps, then create a false narrative that the devices were hacked. They charged victims between $350 to $2,000 for assistance in securing their banking credentials, often transferring high-value cases to another member posing as a senior technician to extract more money. The suspects had been operating for approximately two months, and investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of their fraudulent activities. A case has been registered against them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
