In a significant setback for the investigation into the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, Amritpal Singh Mehron, the prime suspect, has refused to provide a voice sample for forensic analysis. A local court in Bathinda, Punjab, India, has sent Mehron to judicial custody until April 29 after his five-day police remand expired. Mehron was deported to India from the United Arab Emirates on April 10 and was taken into custody at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi by a police team from Bathinda. He is accused of strangling Kumari on June 10, 2022, over allegations that her content was “immoral” and hurt Sikh sentiments. The police sought permission from the court to collect Mehron’s voice sample to match it with a viral video that purportedly links him to the crime. However, the request was denied after Mehron refused consent, as voice sampling is considered voluntary. Investigators believe that the voice sample could have provided crucial evidence in the case.
