In response to a violent protest by workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar, the district's Labour department has taken decisive action against 203 contractors associated with 24 factories. The administration is moving to cancel the licenses of these contractors and has imposed a penalty of ₹1.16 crore for failing to comply with labor laws. Additional Labour Commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi stated that notices have been issued to contractors accused of depriving workers of their statutory benefits, instructing them to clear any pending payments. The government's stance is clear: negligence towards workers' rights will not be tolerated. In light of ongoing labor tensions, a high-level committee has recommended a 21% wage increase for workers across 74 scheduled employments in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad, effective from April 1. Payments for the revised wages are expected to be made between May 7 and 10. Authorities have emphasized that no deductions other than those for the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) will be allowed. Violations will lead to strict legal repercussions, ensuring that overtime is compensated at double the rate and that statutory benefits such as bonuses and gratuities are provided. Both contractors and principal employers will be held accountable for any delays or underpayments.
