UltraTech Cement, chaired by Kumar Mangalam Birla, has surpassed the 200 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) capacity mark, solidifying its position as the largest cement producer outside China. This achievement was announced following the commissioning of three new plants in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh; Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh; and Patratu, Jharkhand. Approximately 90 million tonnes of this capacity has been acquired through strategic purchases, including notable companies like Jaypee and Binani. Birla emphasized the rapid growth, noting that while it took 36 years to reach the first 100 million tonnes, the subsequent milestones were achieved in significantly shorter time frames. Looking ahead, UltraTech plans to expand its capacity to 240 mtpa by FY28 with an investment of ₹16,000 crore (roughly $1.93 billion USD). This ambitious plan comes at a time when the cement industry faces challenges from rising input and energy costs, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions. Analysts predict that while price increases may support revenue, higher costs could pressure profit margins.
