Geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran have significantly disrupted global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chains, impacting shipping routes and production facilities. Consequently, India experienced a 14% decline in LNG imports compared to the previous year, as energy prices surged and supply chains faced disruptions. The country's dependence on imports, which account for nearly 60% of its gas demand, raised concerns about energy security. However, as global LNG prices fell from approximately $25 per million BTU to $16 per BTU, Indian companies such as GAIL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) seized the opportunity to increase their spot market purchases. This strategic move allowed them to secure deals for April–June delivery at the lower price, reversing earlier cautious buying patterns. Despite this temporary relief in pricing, experts emphasize the need for India to enhance domestic production, diversify energy sources, and engage in long-term energy security planning to mitigate reliance on volatile global markets.
