On Wednesday evening, a 23-year-old backhoe loader operator named Abhishek died after his machine overturned into a 16-foot-deep drain during cleaning operations at Dyal Singh College in Lodhi Colony, South Delhi. Police reported that safety measures at the site were inadequate, leading to the tragic accident. Abhishek, a resident of Etah in Uttar Pradesh, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center but was declared dead upon arrival. The incident occurred while the operator was pushing heavy stones into the drain channel, where the edge was unstable and not reinforced. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed that the work was part of a government project executed through a subcontractor, M/s K.R. Anand. DMRC has launched an inquiry into the incident and is providing assistance to Abhishek's family. His brother expressed the difficulty of informing Abhishek's fiancée about the tragedy, as their wedding was scheduled for May 5. The college's principal stated that the area was off-limits due to ongoing construction, and the work was mandated by government orders to clean the Sunehri drain, which had been a point of jurisdictional confusion among local authorities.
