On Thursday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) enforced Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR due to persistently poor air quality. This stage includes a series of measures aimed at reducing pollution at its source. Construction and demolition sites must adhere to strict dust control norms, with projects over 500 square meters required to have approved dust mitigation plans. Open burning of waste, including garbage and biomass, is now prohibited, and roadside eateries are banned from using coal or firewood. Additionally, the use of diesel generators is restricted to essential and emergency services only. Traffic management has been enhanced, with personnel deployed at congestion points and advisories for motorists to turn off engines at red lights. Authorities are also mandated to take action against visibly polluting vehicles and industries within a 300-kilometre radius of Delhi to prevent further air quality deterioration.
