In preparation for the Assembly elections on April 23, election officials in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, are tackling significant challenges to ensure that voters in three remote hamlets can participate. The hamlets of Kuttaiyur, Malliamman Durgham, and Kathirimalai are located in difficult terrains characterized by rugged paths and poor road connectivity. For instance, Kuttaiyur, with 173 electors, requires officials to navigate a 83 km journey across state borders and river crossings, using a mini-lorry for equipment transport due to unsafe roads. Malliamman Durgham, home to 404 electors, is situated within the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, necessitating a nine-km trek through dense forests. The hamlet's residents rely on kerosene lamps for lighting, as solar systems have failed. Kathirimalai, with 173 voters, is accessed via an 8.1-km muddy track, where tractors are used to transport election materials. Despite these obstacles, local residents express eagerness to vote. The District Election Officer, S. Kandasamy, confirmed that all necessary arrangements, including security and power supply for web cameras, are in place to facilitate the electoral process in these remote areas.
