India is preparing to create a centralized digital platform to track pharmaceutical products governed by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Recently approved by the Drug Consultative Committee (DCC), this platform will facilitate real-time, end-to-end tracking of controlled medicines, including opioids and psychotropic drugs, throughout the supply chain—from manufacturing to sale. Regulators have identified the lack of a unified tracking system as a significant vulnerability in preventing the diversion of these drugs for illicit use. The DCC, which advises the government on drug-related matters, discussed the platform's features, regulatory implications, and implementation strategies during a recent meeting. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is expected to collaborate with the Central Bureau of Narcotics, which currently manages a portal for manufacturing units. Once operational, the new portal will allow concerned agencies to effectively monitor and surveil the distribution of controlled medicines, addressing issues related to misuse and diversion of commonly prescribed formulations.
