Nine members of a family lost their lives late Friday night when their multi-utility vehicle (MUV) plunged into an unprotected roadside well in the Shivajinagar area of Dindori town, Nashik district, Maharashtra. The vehicle fell into a 25-meter-deep well filled with water, completely submerging it and trapping all occupants inside. The police have registered two First Information Reports (FIRs): one against the well owner, Rajendra Raje, for failing to provide safety measures, and another against the deceased driver, Sunil Dargode, for alleged negligent driving. The victims, residents of Indore village, were returning home after a get-together at a local coaching institute. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD) for each deceased family member, expressing his condolences. Local officials are investigating how the well, which has been in existence for over 30 years, remained open despite previous requests to close it. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety regulations and enforcement in residential areas.
