Adam Back, a British computer scientist known for his work in cryptography, has firmly denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, the elusive creator of Bitcoin. In a recent post on social media platform X, Back stated, “I’m not Satoshi,” in response to a New York Times investigation led by reporter John Carreyrou. The investigation highlighted early emails from Back that outlined features resembling Bitcoin, as well as his absence from Bitcoin forums during key periods. Despite these findings, Back dismissed the claims as mere coincidences, noting that they stem from a combination of similar experiences and interests among developers. Back's involvement with the Cypherpunks, a group advocating for privacy through cryptography, has led to speculation about his ties to Nakamoto, who is believed to have shared the Bitcoin white paper in similar circles. The investigation also utilized AI analysis to compare writing styles, which Back refuted, emphasizing that his extensive posting history may have skewed the results. Currently, Back is the CEO of Blockstream, a company valued at approximately $3.2 billion. A spokesperson for Blockstream stated that the claims against Back are based on circumstantial evidence rather than definitive proof.
