The Karnataka state government has approved the upgrade of 50 government high schools into pre-university colleges as part of the 2025-26 state budget. This initiative aims to enhance access to higher secondary education, particularly in rural and underserved areas, where girls often drop out after completing their Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) due to the lack of nearby colleges. The two selected schools in Dakshina Kannada district are Government High School Kallarakodi and Government High School Vittal. The government believes that this upgrade will help reduce the dropout rate by providing education closer to home. Schools are eligible for upgrade if they have at least 40 students in class 10 and no other government or aided pre-university college within a 15 km radius. However, this distance requirement can be relaxed for schools with 100 or more students. The education department is currently assessing the infrastructure of the selected institutions to ensure they meet the necessary standards before the start of the next academic year.
