The Indian government has scheduled a special three-day session of Parliament from April 16 to 18, 2026, to fast-track the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserves 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This initiative aims to ensure that women's representation is in place for the 2029 general elections. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, officially known as the Constitution [106th Amendment] Act, 2023, was passed in September 2023 with overwhelming support in both Houses of Parliament.
During the upcoming session, the government plans to introduce constitutional amendments to delink the reservation from the requirement of a fresh Census, which has been delayed until 2027. Additionally, the total number of Lok Sabha seats will be increased from 543 to 816, with 273 seats specifically reserved for women. This expansion ensures that existing members do not lose their seats while accommodating the new quota.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called this legislative effort a reflection of the aspirations of millions of women in India, urging all Members of Parliament to support the initiative. However, opposition parties, including the Congress, have raised concerns about the timing and transparency of the delimitation process associated with this legislation.
