Dr. Prakash Kumar Hazra, a senior interventional cardiologist based in Kolkata, sparked controversy by offering a ₹500 ($6) discount on consultation fees to patients who say 'Jai Shri Ram' at his private clinic. This offer, announced on a Sunday and utilized by three patients the following day, is defended by Hazra as a political expression inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He argues that 'Jai Shri Ram' is a political slogan rather than a religious one, stating, 'I have every right to hold a political view.' Hazra, who has been practicing for nearly three decades and serves as the director of interventional cardiology at Manipal Hospital, has performed over 10,000 radial angiographies and more than 2,500 coronary procedures. He has also reduced his consultation fee from ₹2,000 ($24) to ₹1,000 ($12) to make healthcare more affordable. While he acknowledges that the current state government has made progress, he believes Bengal requires a better alternative. The discount is exclusively for his private clinic and does not apply to hospital consultations.
