As of April 12, over 31,700 piped natural gas (PNG) consumers in India have surrendered their liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections due to a shortage of cooking gas, largely caused by geopolitical tensions in the West Asia region. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), reported that approximately 432,000 PNG connections have been established, with an additional 475,000 customers registered for new connections since March. A government order issued on March 14 prohibits individuals from holding both PNG and domestic LPG connections, which has driven many to switch. Amidst these shortages, India is set to receive an LPG shipment from the vessel Jag Vikram, which is expected to arrive at Kandla port on April 14. The ongoing conflict has led to disruptions in LPG supplies from West Asia, where India sources around 90% of its LPG. To mitigate the impact, the government is exploring alternative sources, including the US and Russia. Additionally, online LPG bookings have increased significantly, reaching 99%, and over 1.3 million 5Kg FTL cylinders have been sold since March 23. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is also taking steps to support electric mobility and address supply chain vulnerabilities in electric vehicle components.
