Luke MacDonald, affectionately known as 'Luke the litter picker,' has dedicated himself to cleaning the streets of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, since retiring from his job at Aerobics First on October 1, 2024. He has collected over 195,600 pieces of litter, utilizing an app called Litterati to document his efforts. MacDonald’s passion for cleanliness is not only a personal endeavor but also a community initiative, as he collaborates with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission (DDBC) to promote litter abatement. His approach includes innovative tactics, such as placing sand buckets for cigarette butts, which have effectively engaged the public in his mission. Inspired by the concept of plogging, which combines jogging with litter collection, MacDonald has encouraged others to join him in this environmentally friendly activity. His work has sparked interest in the community, with individuals like Jesse Sharratt, who now picks up litter with his children, crediting MacDonald for their involvement. The local Tim Hortons has also supported his initiatives, showcasing the positive impact of MacDonald's efforts on community engagement and environmental responsibility.
