Effective April 8, 2023, Air India will implement a revised fuel surcharge structure for both domestic and international flights in response to rising global jet fuel prices. For domestic routes, the airline is moving from a flat surcharge to a distance-based model, charging ₹299 for flights up to 500 km and ₹899 for flights exceeding 2,000 km. This change aligns with the government's cap on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price hikes at 25%. For international flights, surcharges will vary by region, starting at $24 for SAARC destinations and reaching up to $280 for routes to North America and Australia. The airline noted that global jet fuel prices have surged to $195.19 per barrel, nearly doubling in a month, which has necessitated these adjustments. Despite the increases, Air India will absorb part of the costs, indicating that the new surcharges do not fully cover the spike in fuel prices. Tickets issued before the effective date will not incur the revised surcharges unless changes are made requiring fare recalculation.
