Following a directive from the Bombay High Court, residents of Patra Chawl, located in Goregaon, Mumbai, have expressed their willingness to take possession of rehabilitation flats. This decision comes after the court granted a 'last chance' to residents and ordered the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to address disputes regarding the lease terms and the area of land to be allocated to the Goregaon Siddharth Nagar Sahakari Griha Nirman Sanstha Limited, the society representing the residents. Concerns regarding the quality of the rehab buildings, including issues like falling plaster and lift malfunctions, were raised by the society. However, a third-party structural audit confirmed that the buildings are 'sound, stable, and fit for habitation'. The court previously noted a financial burden of nearly ₹18 crore on the state due to delays in Permanent Alternate Accommodation Agreements (PAAA) and ordered the cessation of transit rent payments starting April 1. The court is set to conduct further hearings on April 17 to ensure that society members proceed with taking possession of their flats and resolving any outstanding issues.
