In the upcoming elections in Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is banking on its decade-long governance to secure a third consecutive term. The party's confidence is bolstered by the weakening of the Indian National Congress, which has seen several key leaders defect to the BJP. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claims that by 2026, the Congress will be devoid of Hindu representation. The electoral discourse has been dominated by the BJP's promises to address illegal immigration from Bangladesh and protect Assamese culture, language, and identity. However, the campaign has also been marred by allegations from the Congress regarding Sarma's undisclosed assets abroad, which he has denied, labeling the claims as fabricated. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by perfume businessman Badruddin Ajmal, is also a contender but faces challenges due to recent delimitation that has reduced the influence of Muslim voters from 31 to 22 seats. The counting of votes is set for May 4, coinciding with elections in Kerala, West Bengal, and Puducherry.
