The Delhi government has announced plans to install approximately 300 police booths across the city, specifically at flyovers, subways, and foot overbridges. This initiative, led by Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, aims to enhance public safety by ensuring a permanent police presence in high-traffic areas. The booths will be constructed in phases, with around 100 booths planned under flyovers, 70 in subways, and 130 near foot overbridge landings. The project is estimated to cost between ₹10-15 crore (roughly $1.2-1.8 million USD) and is seen as a preventive measure against theft and vandalism of public infrastructure, which incurs annual repair costs exceeding ₹100 crore (approximately $12 million USD). Additionally, the PWD plans to permit shops and kiosks in subways to further enhance security by increasing foot traffic. This initiative is expected to improve police response times, deter crime, and create a more active environment in areas often flagged for safety concerns.
