The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) in India has announced an extension of the national piped natural gas (PNG) initiative until June 30, 2026, amid a significant shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Launched in January 2026, the initiative aims to accelerate the rollout of city gas distribution (CGD) infrastructure, with specific targets for domestic and commercial PNG connections as well as the establishment of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations. As of March 31, CGD entities have successfully developed infrastructure for 6.5 lakh PNG connections, with gas supply initiated for approximately 5.29 lakh domestic consumers and 2,457 commercial users. The initiative has also seen the addition of 11 new geographical areas to the natural gas pipeline network, enhancing supply security. The government has implemented various measures to manage LPG supply disruptions, including linking commercial LPG allocation with CGD network expansion. The focus remains on providing PNG connections to households and essential institutional users such as hospitals and hotels, with over 10,000 new connections being added daily since mid-March 2026.
