On Tuesday, the Indian Navy received 'Malwan', the second anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, from Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Maharashtra, India. This vessel is 80 meters long, displacing 1,100 tonnes, and is designed for underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare operations in coastal waters. The name 'Malwan' pays homage to the coastal town in Maharashtra, reflecting the maritime heritage associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the legacy of the former INS Malwan, which served until 2003. On the same day, the Navy launched 'Shachi', the first of 11 next-generation offshore patrol vessels (NOPVs) at Goa Shipyard. These vessels will support various operations, including defense, search and rescue, and anti-piracy missions, augmenting the existing fleet of 10 offshore patrol vessels.
