The assembly of the second tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project has commenced at Sawli, Mumbai, at a depth of 39 meters. This TBM will excavate towards Vikhroli. The gantry, which weighs 190 metric tons and measures 18 meters in length, is part of a critical assembly that supports excavation, waterproofing, and tunnel lining. The MAHSR Project, spanning 508 km, will connect 12 stations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, with support from the Japanese government. All necessary land (totaling 1389.5 hectares) has been acquired, and utilities have been successfully relocated. Although land acquisition delays affected progress until 2021, efforts accelerated in 2022. The initial drive of the TBM is anticipated to commence in July 2026.
