As the monsoon approaches, Gurgaon, Haryana, India, is grappling with inadequate stormwater drainage preparedness. According to data from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), only 213 km of the total 566 km of stormwater drains have been cleaned, leaving 353 km still clogged. The cleaning process is particularly lagging in division 3A, where 95.5 km remains uncleared. Concerns are mounting as heavy rains often lead to severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions in the city. MCG chief engineer Vijay Dhaka has assured that all remaining drains will be cleaned by the end of May. However, preparations for managing waterlogging are still incomplete, with several areas identified as vulnerable yet awaiting the deployment of pumping machinery. Local councillors have raised issues regarding delays in tender processes and contractor reliability, emphasizing that these works should have progressed further by now to ensure effective drainage ahead of the rains. The situation remains critical as the monsoon season is just two months away.
