The Maharashtra state government is moving to implement stricter regulations for polluting industries by increasing bank guarantees and fines. A committee has been established to draft a report on the new structure, which is expected within three months. The revised policy will impose higher charges on industries operating in more polluted regions, such as Chandrapur, known for its air pollution. An online system will facilitate the collection and monitoring of bank guarantees and penalties, enhancing transparency and reducing human intervention. This initiative follows a Supreme Court ruling in August 2025, which empowered pollution control boards to demand bank guarantees and impose environmental compensation. Environment Minister Pankaja Munde emphasized the need for the policy to ensure that industries prioritize pollution control while remaining considerate of business operations.
