The Massachusetts House of Representatives approved a significant bill aimed at enhancing student focus and protecting mental health by banning cell phones in schools and regulating social media access for minors. The bill passed with a vote of 129-25 and prohibits social media use for anyone under the age of 14, requiring parental consent for those aged 14 and 15. Restrictions will be lifted once individuals reach 16 years old. House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano (Democrat from Quincy) emphasized the need for such measures, stating that social media algorithms can be addictive and detrimental to youth mental health. Additionally, the legislation mandates that school districts implement a yearly policy to prohibit the use of electronic devices during school hours and school-sponsored activities. Having already passed the Senate, the bill will return for further consideration before regulations are expected to be in place by October.
