Rohit Acharya, a senior executive in a pharmaceutical company, and his wife Jyoti, who runs a shop, sought a dealership for a soft drink brand. After applying, Jyoti received a call from an individual claiming to be a company representative. Following a series of communications, she was asked to pay a registration fee of ₹20,550 and was prompted to make further payments totaling ₹1.25 lakh for product selection and security. The scam escalated with demands for additional fees, including ₹31,000 for visiting charges. Realizing they were being scammed, the couple halted further payments and reported the matter to the cyber crime police. Authorities have registered a case under Sections 318(4) and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and an investigation is underway.
