On Sunday, the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, performed the state's first-ever heart transplant. This landmark surgery was facilitated by a multi-city organ-sharing initiative, with the donor heart airlifted from Delhi for a patient suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the achievement as a significant advancement in medical care, while Governor Anandiben Patel commended the coordination involved. The successful transplant was made possible through a coordinated air ambulance transfer and a specially created 'green corridor' in Lucknow, ensuring timely delivery and reducing ischemic damage to the heart. Professor RK Dhiman, director of SGPGIMS, noted that this operation lays the groundwork for a comprehensive cardiac transplant program in Uttar Pradesh, reducing the need for patients to travel out of state for critical procedures. The surgery involved a multidisciplinary team, including cardiothoracic surgeons and anaesthesiologists, highlighting SGPGIMS's ambition to expand its capabilities in multi-organ transplants.
