Stanford University has expanded its Jain-friendly dining options across campus dining halls, a move aimed at reshaping how students access exemptions from the mandatory meal plan. The updated menus, which began rolling out in January, feature a variety of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and spices, all clearly labeled and served with separate ware to meet Jain dietary requirements. This initiative includes a dedicated Jain station at Gerhard Casper Dining Hall, developed in collaboration with the Office for Religious and Spiritual Life (ORSL), in response to an increase in students adhering to Jainism, a faith that restricts the consumption of meat, seafood, eggs, root vegetables, and mushrooms. The expansion comes amid concerns regarding the misuse of meal plan exemptions, with some students allegedly misidentifying as Jain to divert meal funds. The introduction of Jain-friendly stations has reportedly curtailed this practice, bringing students back under the meal plan. Feedback from Jain students indicates that the new options facilitate adherence to their dietary restrictions while dining with peers. Staff training on food preparation and labeling has also been implemented, with plans for further expansion of offerings.
