In the lead-up to the West Bengal assembly elections, thousands of migrant workers from Malda and Murshidabad districts are returning home to cast their votes. Many of these workers, who were already in the region for Eid-ul-Fitr, are extending their stay until Eid-ul-Adha to ensure they can participate in the elections on April 23 and 29. Concerns are growing among these workers about being classified as doubtful voters after the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which could lead to the cancellation of their voter IDs. This trend is particularly evident among those working in states such as Maharashtra, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. According to Asif Faruk, general secretary of the Parijayee Sharmik Aikya Manch (Migrant Labourer Unity Forum), many workers are opting to stay back for about two-and-a-half months to fulfill their voting obligations. Additionally, some workers cited difficulties in procuring LPG cylinders due to the Gulf crisis as another reason for their extended stay. The pressure from the ruling Trinamool Congress party to return for voting is also influencing their decisions. For many, including workers like Farjul Islam, having a voter ID and Aadhaar is crucial for securing employment in places like Navi Mumbai, making their participation in the elections essential.
