On Monday, the Supreme Court of India mandated the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into allegations that Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu awarded government contracts to firms associated with his relatives. The inquiry will investigate contracts valued at over ₹1,200 crore awarded between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2025. The court's order follows public interest litigations filed by the Save Mon Region Federation and Voluntary Arunachal Senaa, which claim favoritism in awarding contracts to companies like Brand Eagles, linked to Khandu's wife Tsering Dolma, and Alliance Trading Co., owned by his nephew Tsering Tashi. Reports indicate that four firms related to Khandu's family received 146 work contracts worth ₹383.74 crore in Tawang district alone from 2012 to 2023. Notably, 59 contracts worth ₹16.83 crore were awarded directly without a tender process, violating the ₹50 lakh limit established in 2020 aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs. The contracts encompass various public works, including roads, bridges, and community facilities.
