Virgin Atlantic CEO Corneel Koster has warned that the ongoing jet fuel crisis, driven by the conflict in Iran, will impact the airline's operations beyond May. Koster mentioned that the airline has limited visibility on fuel availability after this period, despite having hedged approximately 60% of its fuel requirements. The crisis has resulted in global fuel supply disruptions, particularly affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. Oil prices recently surged past $100 per barrel following U.S. restrictions on Iranian shipping. In response to rising fuel costs, Virgin Atlantic has implemented fuel surcharges on ticket prices while still experiencing strong demand for routes to the Caribbean, India, and the U.S. Koster emphasized the need for airlines to critically assess their routes during this crisis, noting that Virgin Atlantic will not be adding new destinations for now. Meanwhile, other airlines in India, such as Air India and IndiGo, are also raising ticket prices and fees due to the fuel crisis.
