India's shipping ministry has allowed four Iranian oil tankers to berth at Sikka port in Gujarat, following a request from Reliance Industries, the operator of the world's largest refining complex. This decision comes after the United States temporarily waived sanctions on Iranian oil purchases to help stabilize global oil prices, with the waiver set to expire on April 19. India has not imported Iranian crude since May 2019 due to U.S. pressure. The vessels granted permission include the Iran-flagged VLCCs Felicity and Hedy, and two others flagged by Comoros and Curacao. Each supertanker can carry up to 2 million barrels of oil. The aging tankers, all over 20 years old, typically require seaworthiness certification, which complicates their docking. Despite the granted permission, it remains uncertain whether Reliance will process the oil, as it seeks to ensure compliance with sanctions and Indian regulations.
