He will succeed David Barnea, whose five-year term ends in June. Gofman, originally from Belarus, immigrated to Israel in 1990 and has a distinguished military career, including a serious injury during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack while commanding a training base. He has also authored a controversial policy document advocating for continued military control over Gaza after a potential defeat of Hamas.
