Jet fuel prices in India have skyrocketed to ₹200,000 per kilolitre, over double the previous rate of ₹96,638.14. This surge, driven by the ongoing war in West Asia, has led airlines to raise fares significantly, especially for international flights. The Indian government intervened by capping domestic fare increases, allowing Indian Oil's jet fuel price to rise by 8.5% since March, now costing ₹104,927 per kilolitre in Delhi. In contrast, international jet fuel prices have surged 129% in March alone, prompting airlines to introduce fuel surcharges ranging from ₹900 to ₹10,000 on overseas routes. Karan Khanna, an analyst at Ambit Capital, noted that fare hikes on international routes are expected to be sharper due to the absence of government support. Airlines cumulatively spent nearly ₹60,000 crore on jet fuel last year, with IndiGo alone accounting for ₹26,197.3 crore. The recent directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandates airlines to make at least 60% of seats available without additional charges, further complicating their ability to manage rising costs. Despite the government's efforts to maintain fare discipline, the ongoing geopolitical tensions and soaring fuel prices continue to strain airline profitability, particularly on international routes.
