In March 2023, two residents of Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, were victims of cyber fraud, collectively losing ₹1.57 crore. The first incident involved a 47-year-old IT professional who was contacted via WhatsApp by fraudsters posing as representatives of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He was convinced to open a Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) trading account and made an initial investment of ₹50,000, which later escalated to ₹5.5 lakh. When he attempted to withdraw his funds, he was asked to pay an additional ₹5.75 lakh in fake taxes. A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. In a second incident, a 47-year-old professor from Greater Noida had ₹59 lakh withdrawn from his overdraft account after his email was hacked. He reported that he had not used the overdraft facility and suspected that his email was compromised after clicking on a suspicious link. Both cases are currently being investigated by the Cybercrime Branch.
