The Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan has reported that 17,675 visually impaired individuals have regained their eyesight through eye donation over the past 24 years. Since its inception in 2002, the society has collected 27,307 corneas, facilitating free transplants for many beneficiaries. However, widespread myths and a lack of awareness continue to deter potential donors, with society president B L Sharma emphasizing the need for increased public participation to address the 300,000 individuals suffering from corneal blindness in the state. Awareness drives conducted at hospitals, temples, and educational institutions aim to dispel misconceptions about eye donation. Personal stories from recipients highlight the life-changing impact of these transplants. Doctors stress that corneas should ideally be retrieved within six to eight hours of death to ensure successful transplantation. Greater engagement in eye donation can significantly improve the quality of life for many waiting for transplants.
