A special investigation team (SIT) in Faridkot has been granted permission by a court to examine Varinder Singh Fauji, a former detainee under the National Security Act (NSA) and aide to jailed MP Amritpal Singh, as a witness in the murder case of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau. Gurpreet was shot dead on October 9, 2024, while returning home from a gurdwara in Kotkapura. Police investigations suggest that his murder was ordered by Amritpal Singh, who has been incarcerated in Dibrugarh, Assam, under the NSA since 2023. Fauji, a former Indian Army personnel, is currently in custody for his involvement in a violent mob attack on a police station in Ajnala in February 2023. The court's decision, made on April 2, allows police to secure Fauji's testimony, which could bolster the prosecution’s case against the accused, including Amritpal Singh and Canada-based designated terrorist Arshdeep Singh, alias Arsh Dalla. The police have invoked various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the 17 accused, including murder and organized crime, with charges against 12 individuals formally framed as of January 2026. Gurpreet was known for his criticism of Amritpal after previously aligning with him, which allegedly led to his murder.
