The Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) in Lucknow is preparing to launch a new mortuary facility by the end of April, which will significantly enhance the city's postmortem capacity. This development marks a shift from the long-standing reliance on King George’s Medical University (KGMU), which has been the only postmortem facility in Lucknow. RMLIMS's new mortuary will feature two autopsy tables and a cold room capable of accommodating nine bodies. RMLIMS director CM Singh stated that forensic experts will assist in conducting autopsies alongside doctors from the Postmortem House Services (PMHS). Initially, the new facility is expected to handle 4-5 postmortem examinations per day, helping to ease the current load on KGMU, which performs around 20 examinations daily. Training for students from the department of forensic medicine and toxicology at RMLIMS is already underway. Additionally, the mortuary at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) is in the works but is facing delays due to pending licensing from authorities.
