The Pentagon's proposed fiscal 2027 budget seeks to acquire 85 Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, significantly increasing from 47 requested in the previous year. This budget, totaling $1.5 trillion, includes $1.15 trillion as a base request and an additional $350 billion from a forthcoming reconciliation bill. The Air Force will receive 38 F-35A jets, while the Marine Corps will get 10 F-35B jets, and 37 F-35C jets are allocated for aircraft carriers. This proposal marks a 42% increase in national security spending compared to the current fiscal year, raising overall national security spending to 4.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP). The budget also includes funding for two Virginia-class submarines and emphasizes the development of the Golden Dome missile defense project, requesting $17.5 billion for research and development. Criticism has emerged from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that the budget fails to address the negative impacts of ongoing military conflicts and economic conditions. The Pentagon is expected to provide more detailed projections on April 21.
