A recent study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden suggests that low birth weight may be a significant factor in determining stroke risk later in life. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 800,000 individuals and found that those born with a weight below 3.5 kg (7.7 pounds) had a 21% higher risk of experiencing stroke compared to those with higher birth weights. This increased risk persisted even after accounting for adult weight, indicating that early growth may have lasting effects on vascular health. The study highlighted that women with low birth weight showed an 18% higher risk, while men had a 23% higher risk. The findings are set to be presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO2026) in Istanbul, Turkey, from May 12-15. Researchers advocate for including birth weight in stroke risk assessments alongside traditional factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. This shift in focus emphasizes the importance of considering a person's early life history in understanding their long-term health risks.
