As the Baisakhi harvest festival approaches, wheat farmers in Sangrur and Barnala districts of Punjab, India, are facing significant concerns due to heavy rainfall. Since Tuesday afternoon, Sangrur has received 12.33mm of rain, while Barnala experienced a heavier 19.6mm. This has led to widespread crop lodging, with farmers like Dalbir Singh from Duggan village reporting a 30% loss of his wheat crop. Many farmers are skeptical about receiving adequate compensation from the government, fearing that promises may not translate into financial relief. Sangrur's chief agriculture officer, Dharminderjit Singh, noted that while lodging has occurred, the overall damage is less severe compared to districts like Bathinda, Muktsar, and Fazilka. In Barnala, chief agriculture officer Sukhpal Singh stated that the situation is manageable for now, but warned that any further moisture could affect the quality of the harvest. To address these issues, the state government has ordered an immediate special crop-loss assessment (girdawari) to evaluate the extent of damage and ensure timely reporting from officials.
