A special court in Mumbai has granted bail to Naquee Ahmed Shaikh and Haroon Naik, two accused in the 2011 Mumbai triple bomb blasts case, after they spent nearly 15 years in jail. The court highlighted the prolonged incarceration and violation of their right to a speedy trial as key factors in its decision. The judge, Satyanarayan R Navander, stated that the right to a speedy trial must be respected both in letter and spirit, allowing the bail plea based on the lengthy duration of the trial. The accused are required to execute a PR bond of ₹1,00,000 each and adhere to conditions such as not leaving the court's jurisdiction without permission and surrendering their passports. The 13/7 blasts, which occurred at Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar, and Dadar, resulted in 27 fatalities and over 130 injuries. The trial has been ongoing since charges were framed in September 2019, with 203 witnesses already testifying and more than 100 yet to be examined. The court noted that even with expedited proceedings, the trial is expected to take considerable time to conclude.
