The Maharashtra Cabinet has made several key decisions aimed at improving technology integration, power sector efficiency, and disaster management. A new Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Department will be established to promote digital governance and enhance public services. The existing Directorate of Information Technology will be upgraded, and a dedicated IT cadre will be created to improve project execution across departments. In a significant move for the power sector, the Cabinet approved a restructuring plan for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), allowing it to raise ₹32,679 crore (approximately $3.9 billion USD) through government-backed bonds. This plan includes the separation of agricultural power distribution from the main company, which may raise concerns about privatization and its impact on electricity tariffs. Additionally, the Maharashtra Resilient Development Programme (MRDP), supported by ₹165 crore (approximately $20 million USD) from the World Bank, aims to strengthen disaster response and provide financial support to citizens affected by disasters, including housing loans and insurance coverage. Flood mitigation projects will also be initiated in areas prone to flooding, such as Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ichalkaranji.
