As summer temperatures rise in Sambalpur, Odisha, the Sambalpur Zoo has taken proactive measures to ensure the comfort of its animals. Authorities have installed air coolers and provided large ice cubes in the enclosures of leopards and bears to help them cope with the heat. All 28 animal enclosures have been fitted with bamboo sheds and thatch roofs, while water holes have been created to keep the animals cool. Additionally, water is sprinkled on the thatched roofs during the day to mitigate heat. The animals are being fed a special summer diet that includes glucose, ORS, honey, and hydrating fruits such as watermelon and cucumber. The zoo also features bird enclosures covered with green nets to reduce heat exposure. With a daily footfall of around 1,000 visitors during summer holidays, the zoo offers storytelling sessions as an attraction. The Sambalpur Zoo is home to 350 animals across 18 species, including leopards, bears, and various birds.
