A special court in Mumbai has rejected the bail application of Balu Anna Chavan, a jail constable at Solapur Central Jail, who is accused of facilitating a drug syndicate linked to notorious kingpin Salim Dola. The allegations arise from a December 2025 operation by the Mumbai Crime Branch, which uncovered a mephedrone manufacturing unit in Satara district, leading to the seizure of over 7 kg of finished mephedrone and nearly 39 kg of the drug in the drying stage, with a total estimated value of ₹115 crore (approximately $14 million USD). The court, presided over by Special Judge N.R. Pradhan, noted that the evidence against Chavan indicated his involvement in organized crime while he was on duty. Chavan reportedly allowed Faiyaz Shaikh, an alleged associate of Dola, to use his mobile phone for communication with other members of the drug network, including contacts in Dubai. The court found that Chavan's defense, claiming the phone was loaned on humanitarian grounds, could only be assessed during the trial. Given the severity of the charges and the ongoing investigation, the court denied bail.
